Unlike nuclear plant transformation, genes can be targeted to specific sites in chloroplasts. WebChloroplasts are the photosynthetic organelles of green algae and plants. Owing to their endosymbiotic origin, they contain their own genome with about 100 genes. Compared with their cyanobacterial ancestors, chloroplasts have lost most of their genes, due to either gene loss or transfer to the nucleus.
